Indonesia has a total population of more than 238 million, according to the latest census data recorded by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

"The final figure is in the process of counting. It is more than 238 million," BPS head Rusman Heryawan said after a meeting at the Vice Presidential palace Friday.

The data will be finalized and officially announced by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during a state of union address at the House of Representatives on Aug. 16.

In 2000, Indonesia's population stood at 205 million.

The census is part of a worldwide population registration conducted in many countries.
