JAYAPURA: Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi swore in Brig. Gen. (ret.) Abraham Octovianus Atururi and Rahimin Katjhong as West Papua governor and vice governor respectively for the 2012-2017 term of office in Manokwari on Tuesday.

“During the swearing-in ceremony, the situation was peaceful, without any upheaval. The event was attended by around 2,000 people at Hotel Aston Manokwari,” Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Wachyono told The Jakarta Post.

The Manokwari Police deployed 659 personnel, including soldiers to secure the event.

There had been fears that the ceremony might be disrupted by protests given previous incidents in which supporters of the three losing candidates set fire to governor-elect Abraham’s house after refusing to accept the Constitutional Court’s ruling in his favor.

In his keynote speech, Gamawan appealed for support from the West Papua People’s Council and other agencies for the new governor and vice governor.
