At 05.54 am of the May 27, 2006 a devastating earthquake shook the Special Province of Yogyakarta, located in the central part of Java Island, Indonesia. The epicentre of the earthquake, registered 5.9 on the Richter scale, was located 37 kilometres south of the city of Yogyakarta, the capital of the Special Province of Yogyakarta.

Based on official reports (as of 1 pm of Western Indonesian Time, 29 May 2006) the death toll stood at 4,355 people with thousands injured. The final figure is yet to be tallied.

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia as well as the Indonesian community residing in the United Kingdom and Ireland, deeply appreciate the outpouring of sympathy and offer of assistance extended by the Government and people of the United Kingdom and the Government and people of Ireland to alleviate the sufferings caused by the earthquake.In addition to assistance by the public channelled through established humanitarian agencies, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in London stands ready to facilitate the channelling of assistance by the public for the victims of the earthquake.
