REQUIRED DOCUMENTS AND PROCEDURES FOR FOREIGNERS
TO GET MARRIED IN INDONESIA
Please note that the following information is but a brief outline of the requirements of and procedures for getting married in Indonesia and that you should always consult your Embassy or Consulate General in Indonesia as well as the marriage authorities in Indonesia for more detailed information before you make any further plans.
- Valid passports (each passport being valid for a minimum 6 months as from the date of entry into Indonesia).
- Valid visas to enter Indonesia.
Please note:
- British citizens (UK passport holders) who wish to get married in Indonesia may enter Indonesia as tourists using the visa-free short visit facilities (no visa required) which is valid for a stay in Indonesia of up to 60 days but which cannot be extended or transferred to another type of visa. However, if a couple intends to stay longer than 60 days, they will have to leave Indonesia and then re-enter Indonesia.
- There is no time limit if a couple, who want to get married in Indonesia, wish to stay in Indonesia before the marriage itself takes place, provided they stay in Indonesia within the time limit of their visas. Furthermore, if all the supporting documentation is in order and all the parties concerned (that is the couple's Embassy/Consulate General in Indonesia, and the marriage authorities in Indonesia) have been notified about the wedding they can proceed with the marriage.
- Birth Certificates (if a copy, and not the original, then the copy must be legalized by a solicitor or by the individual's Embassy/ Consulate General in Indonesia).
- Minimum age to get rnarried: females must be aged 16 years or over, and males must be aged 19 years or over.
- Letter from both sets of parents/guardians, stating that there are no objections to the marriage.
- Legalized written statements confirming the status of each individual (single/ widow/ widower/ divorcee etc.).
- Letter from the couple's Church (if the couple are both Christians and members of a church and wish to be married in a church in Indonesia).
- All foreigners (in this case British nationals) who are planning to get married in Indonesia are required by British law to present a "Certificate of Non-Impediment" (the original and not a copy). A "Certificate of Non-Impediment" is issued by the local authorities where the individual lives in his/ her home country (before leaving for Indonesia), or by his/ her respective Embassy or Consulate General in Jakarta, Indonesia (after arriving in Indonesia). Other nationals should consult their respective Embassy or Consulate General in the United Kingdom (if they are residence in the UK) or their Embassy or Consulate General in Jakarta, Indonesia.
- If one or both persons wishes to convert to Islam and be married according to Islamic Law, the marriage must be reported and registered with the Religious Affairs Office (Kantor Urusan Agama) in Indonesia. If the marriage is to be a Christian one, the marriage must be reported and registered with the Civil Registration Office (Kantor Catatan Sipil) in Indonesia.
- The Offices in Indonesia authorized to perform such marriages:
The Religious Affairs Office (Kantor Urusan Agama) and the Mosque for Moslems;
The Civil Registration Office (Kantor Catatan Sipil) and the Church for Christians.
- Please be advised that each region in Indonesia has different customs/ traditions when conducting wedding ceremonies.
After the marriage and in order to ensure that your marriage in Indonesia is valid and legal in the UnitedKingdom, please note the following carefully:
- Please ensure that after the wedding ceremony, you are given a marriage certificate or other documentation as pro ofthat you have been legally married in Indonesia. Since most of the documents will be written in the Indonesian language, may we suggest that you try to have all documentation translated by a sworn and authorized English translator in Indonesia before you return to the United Kingdom. After you arrive in the United Kingdom, you should take this translated document/certificate to your local marriage registration office to be registered.
- However, if a British couple (that is, two individuals holding UK passports) who have got married in Indonesia wish to have their marriage documents certified in the United Kingdom, then they may come to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in London where the documents will then be translated (if written in the Indonesian language). The married couple should then take the translation of the marriage certificates/ documentation to their local marriage registration office to be registered.
DO NOT FORGET TO REGISTER YOUR MARRIAGE
WITH YOUR LOCAL MARRIAGE REGISTRATION OFFICE!
