Darmasiswa Programme for Foreign/International Students
Academic Year 2012/2013
Darmasiswa Programme is a scholarship from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia given to international students from foreign countries to study Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language), the art of traditional music, traditional dance, crafts, tourism, culinary and other specific areas of study at several higher education institutions in Indonesia.
The aims of Darmasiswa Programme are to promote the spread of Bahasa Indonesia and Indonesian culture to other countries. In addition, it is also reciprocal efforts towards scholarship offers given by foreign countries to Indonesia, and as one of the elements of cultural diplomacy.
Darmasiswa Programme is a non-degree programme. Students are prohibited to work, to commence a research and to participate in political activities while under this programme.
- PROGRAMMES OFFERED
- DARMASISWA REGULAR 1 (ONE) YEAR PROGRAMME
This scholarship is given to international students from foreign countries to study Bahasa Indonesia, the art of traditional music, traditional dance, crafts, tourism, culinary and other specific areas of study at higher education institutions in Indonesia for a period of 1 (one) year.
- DARMASISWA REGULAR 6 (SIX) MONTHS PROGRAMME
This scholarship is given to international students from foreign countries to study Bahasa Indonesia and other specific areas of study at higher education institutions in Indonesia for a period of 6 (six) months.
- DARMASISWA REGULAR 3 (THREE) MONTHS PROGRAMME
This scholarship is given to international students from foreign countries to learn a specific field of study at several higher education institutions in Indonesia (ISI Yogyakarta, ITB, IPB, UNESA, UNAIR, UIN Jakarta, UNUD, UGM, UI) for a period of 3 (three) months.)
- PARTICIPANTS’ RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS
- PARTICIPANTS’ RIGHTS
- Receive a scholarship every month
- Participant will be assisted by the host higher education institution in search of accommodation.
- Participant will be picked up by the committee upon arrival at the airport.
- PARTICIPANTS’ OBLIGATION
- Participant is willing to assist the university/higher education institution or nearest school in the process of learning a foreign language and other academic activities.
- Participant will attend course/programme until its conclusion.
- Participant is willing to sign a statement letter given by the Indonesian Embassy in each country prior to departure to Indonesia, and by the Ministry of Education and Culture upon arrival in Indonesia, which contains:
- Shall follow the prevailing regulations in the higher education institutions.
- Shall not request a change of study area or place of study before of after arrival to Indonesia.
- Shall not commit or participate in any criminal act whatsoever.
- Shall not be involved or participate in any political activities nor seek work during study period in Indonesia.
- Shall not be involved in drug abuse or any illegal drug related activities.
- Shall not travel abroad or outside Indonesia during study period.
- Shall not bring any family member during the study period in Indonesia.
- Will be fully responsible for every personal item that they carry, before or after having been in Indonesia, and any loss will not be the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
- Willing to be sent back to home country if found to be breaking the above commitments or any other prevailing laws and regulations in Indonesia.
- SCHEDULE
- Registration opens in November 2011
- Application deadline in mid-February 2012
- Administrative selection in March 2012
- Academic selection in mid-April 2012
- Announcement of selection results at the end of April 2012
- Confirmation of participants’ willingness at the latest end of May 2012
- Participants’ arrival in Indonesia in early August 2012
- Participants’ arrival orientation in early August 2012
- Course/lecture schedule begun in accordance with the following:
- Regular Programme 3 (three) months commencing in early June 2012 until August 2012
- Regular Programme 6 (six) months commencing in early August 2012 until January 2013
- Regular Programme 1 (one) year commencing in early August 2012 until July 2013
- For those who are studying in University of Indonesia (UI), course schedule commences at the end of July 2012
- VISA
The type of visa to be used for the programme is Social-Culture Visit Visa or Visa Kunjungan Sosial Budaya (VKSB), valid for 60 days, which can be applied through the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate at the Participant’s home country. The visa will be converted into residence permit during study period after participant’s arrival in Indonesia through the facilities of the Secretariat of State of the Republic of Indonesia and the Directorate General of Immigration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
Participants/candidates are not permitted to use Tourist Visa or Visa-On-Arrival to study in Indonesia, which will cause difficulties in gaining a residence permit in Indonesia.
- SCHOLARSHIP
Participant will receive a scholarship allowance of Rp. 2.000.000,00 (two million rupiah per month), with details as follows:
a. Living cost : Rp. 1.200.000,-
b. Book allowance : Rp. 200.000,-
c. Local transport : Rp. 200.000,-
d. Health allowance : Rp. 200.000,-
e. Personal allowance : Rp. 200.000,-
Because the scholarship offered may not be sufficient for daily needs, participants are suggested to bring extra allowance in US Dollar, which can be easily converted into rupiah.
- QUALIFICATIONS
- Maximum age of 35 years old
- Last education background of high-school or same level
- Under good health
- Able to communicate in English or Bahasa Indonesia
- Possess the basic skills in chosen field of study
- DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION
- Complete the application form (downloadable here)
- Copy of the latest academic transcripts
- Copy of certificate of degree completion
- Recommendation letter from the participant’s home university/higher education institution/school.
- Physically and mentally healthy, proven by certificate of health from a doctor/GP
- 5 passport-sized photos (4x6cm)
- Copy of passport, which must still be valid for minimum of 18 months
- Ability to communicate in English
- Recommendation letter and the statement of pass selection (administrative selection and interview results) from the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate at home country
- If deemed necessary, the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in participant’s home country may hold interviews for applicants.

- PARTICIPANT’S TRAVEL TO INDONESIA
The Indonesian Government; in this case the Bureau of Planning and International Cooperation of the Ministry of Education and Culture, will not bear the costs of participant’s travel expenses from the home country to Indonesia and return. The Ministry of Education and Culture will provide the local travel expenses from Jakarta to other cities, yet the return travel expenses will be borne by the participant.
- HEALTH INSURANCE
The Ministry of Education and Culture does not provide insurance facilities. For that reason, participants are expected to have an international health insurance.
