President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reiterates his hope that the Indonesian people will unite in the current fight against terrorism.
In his annual Independence Day on address on Friday, he said that terrorists have launched a new phenomenon in committing heinous acts against their own country, including a recently uncovered plot to assassinate Yudhoyono himself
“I would like to emphasize that our country must not, and will not, be defeated by terrorism,” he said.
“These terrorists want us to be gripped by fear and, subsequently, to impede our daily activites,” Yudhoyono said.
He also urged civilians to inform security officers should they suspect any member of their community of being involved with terrorist groups.
“Let us protect our citizens and youth from misleading, extremist views that may lead them to commit acts of terrorism,'' he said.
